New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
