Powerful Gales Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to avoid going out as powerful gusts strike the region.

Powerful winds attaining speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused nearly 90,000 properties without power and forced agencies to halt in excess of 100 flights, based on domestic outlets.

The gales are impacting the whole southern region and southern sections of the northern region, per the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have announced infrequent severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in key areas including Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and get ready for more utility disruptions.

Widespread Impact and Crisis Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting households predominantly in the southern region, while officials report that energy was being slowly brought back.

Local media have reported that in some places roofs have been ripped off houses, and utility poles and vegetation have been brought down by the gusts.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a female was blown onto oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Aircraft services to and from the urban area have been cancelled due to the winds, while some roads and libraries are also closed.

Meanwhile authorities in Canterbury have issued a crisis declaration, to assist recovery activities.

Labor Protests During Severe Weather

The powerful gales on this day come as tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been called a "major walkout", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

But the extreme weather has forced them to modify some of their plans, with several external protests moved indoors or cancelled.

Similar gusts are impacting Australia, ushering in a high-temperature event to the remote areas.

Authorities have declared burning restrictions for fear of forest fires.
