The anticipation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
