The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was convicted of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
