The Substance Film
Coralie Fargeat's bold satire addresses the oppressive nature of female beauty as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. This Supernatural Story
Steven Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries through this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and it looks like guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. This Self-Referential Film
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom through this self-referential adventure. The Black Phone Horror
The director's locked-room horror holds up well without requiring a sequel. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the youth anxious. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the disconnected phone mounted nearby continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, as the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in this director's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet the lead actress succeeds to present the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, late night, the Film4 channel
