Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
